12 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ DR. JAMES I. McCORD — St. Andrews, Scotland — “The notion of the glory of God appears to constitute something of an embarrassment to certain strands of contemporary thought”, according to Dr. James I. McCord, president of Princeton Theological Seminary, USA. He said this in the opening address to the Centennial Consultation of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, held here August 22-28, 1977, under the theme: “The glory of God and the future of man”. Dr. McCord countered some of the current theological trends by affirming that “however thoroughly the transcendent God may have been replaced by the religion of humanity, the old theme of the glory of God still abides”. “As the history of Marxism has made clear, commitments to changing and improving the world — if they are to have more than passing power — must be undergirded by at least quasi-religious allegiances”, said Dr. McCord. Referring to the second part of the Consultation’s theme — the future of man —, the American theologian spoke about the quality of life as it relates to human future, and stressed that the quest for this “quality” cannot be fulfilled without the corrective that glory belongs to God alone: “It serves to correct social optimism by remembering the fact of sin and corruption, which keep even the best designed schemes from attaining full success . . . and it balances social pessimism by noting that sin itself is not ultimate and carries seeds for its own destruction.” The glory of God, affirmed Dr. McCord, is seen in his works, in the covenant with Israel and, supremely, in the sending of his Son: “Indeed, in Christ God and man meet amid all the contingencies of historical existence”. May God grant a blessed, peaceful and joyful Christmas holiday to every member of our church, and continue His blessings in the New Year. Every organization of our church had special Christmas socials, when members enjoyed the fellowship of each other. The Allen Park Symphony and Choir rendered a beautiful Christmas holiday concert attended by many people from every denomination in the city. A special Thanksgiving service collection on November 23rd ($400.00) was forwarded to the Transylvanian Earthquake Relief Fund. We need one hundred dollars more to reach our goal of $1,000.The ancient custom of caroling in the church was carried on in previous years by the choir. We need volunteers to cover the great metropolitan area and help carry on this beautiful tradition of our church. The New Years’ Eve celebration will be sponsored by the Golden Circle Club.
