YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO After the summer vacation time and summer heat the work has started again in our church. Our Sunday School opened its doors not only for the children, but also for adults. In September the Yolanda Circle held a Bingo-Party and also took part at an International Festival. The Men’s Club served a Sauerkraut-Kolbasz dinner. All three were successful. On October 6th, day of World-Wide Communion, more than 50% of our members took Communion. During the church service on October 20th, we remembered the 60th year of ordination to the ministry and 40th wedding anniversary of the Rev. Alexander Marton. The Rev. John Botty was our guest minister on that day. After the service the members of the congregation were guests at a Coffee hour. We would like to ask God’s blessing upon the Rev. and Mrs. Marton. On November 3rd, we will serve Communion for new wine. On November 10th, we will have our “Orphanage Sunday.” The Rt. Rev. Louis Nagy, director of the Bethlen Home will preach the Word of God. On November 17th, after a combined English-Hungarian service, which will start at 10:30 A.M. we will hold our Annual Elizabeth Day Dinner. In the month of October we started a Bible Study group. We meet every week at the home of a member in the group and study the Book of Acts. YOUTH NEWS The Bethlen Youth Federation of our Hungarian Reformed Church in America held its Annual Conference at Camp Silver Lake in Stockholm, New Jersey sponsored by the Roebling and Perth Amboy Youth Fellowships from August 29-September 2, 1974. The theme of the Conference was Christianity vs. the Occults. In choosing the theme for the Conference, we tried to find a subject that would be of interest to all our children at their various ages and be a very timely one as well. In the last few years, the interest toward the supernaturals and most especially to demonology and Satanism and his evil forces has grown so much that many people have become not only interested but personally involved with the Occults. Thus our theme this year dealt with the personalities and the nature of Satan and his evil forces in the world today. Our speaker on the theme Christianity vs. the Occults was the Rev. Harry Thomas, founder and director of the radio ministry program, “Come Alive’’. Rev. Thomas in his lecture dealt with the nature and dangers of the occult, mainly Satan worship, Spiritualism and other forces of Satan’s work. We were convinced that the evil forces are for real, and are ready to destroy God’s creation, and are ready to take over the whole world if we are not strong and resist the temptations of Satan. To better understand our theme we viewed two movies, which we also recommend to you as opposed to the famous sensational movie “The Exorcist”. They are “The Occult” and “The Enemy”. Our subtopic for the conference was “Identity within the Hungarian Reformed Church in America”. Our speaker on the subject was Rev. Szabolcs Nagy, minister from the United Presbyterian Church of Alpha, New Jersey. It was most interesting how our speaker used himself and his life as an example to prove his point, that he, as someone who was brought up in the United States of America, can have and enjoy the many traditions and inherited doctrines of our churches as the purest and most Christlike witness church that he has found in America or in the world presently. Unfortunately the Conference was not well attended. In the past we have had over 100 young people. This year, however, the total of those registered was 73, which included the advisers also. We must see one thing very clearly. Our young people live in a puzzled world, where everything is changing, where life seems to be unsafe and unreal, and because of these surroundings they are looking for something that will give meaning to their life. We must alsc realize that our youth will look for answers wherever they can. We must realize the responsibility of helping them to find their answers rightly within our family and within the church the family of God. We must make the effort, as the church of God, who believe that God is the answer, to sit down with them and with patience and humility listen to their questions and with God’s guidance and wisdom try to give answer to satisfy their spiritual questionings. I know very well that we criticize the youth, and they in return criticize us because of failures and inadequacies. But let us put together the good within us and let us work together to further love and peace of heart and mind through the strength and power of Jesus, so we all may be blessed examples of faithful children of God and disciples of His son Jesus, our Lord and Savior. The newly elected officers of the Bethlen Youth Federation are the following: President: Mr. William Kantor, Carteret, N. J.; Vice-President: Miss Barbara Adorján, Youngstown, Ohio; Secretary: Miss Wendy Lazar, Carteret, N. J.; Treasurer: Miss Cathy Bérezik, Perth Amboy, N. J. The next year’s conference will be hosted by tbe Detroit church youth group.
