16 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ THREE IMPORTANT DECISIONS Someone once said: “A person must stop somewhere on the road of life and make his most important decision.” In line with this, the president of Piedmont Bible College, Winston-Salen, North Carolina, said: “There are three important decisions which a man must make early in his life, and they are: (1) What shall be my life’s chosen vocation, (2) Who shall be my life’s partner in marriage, and (3); Whom shall I serve, God or man?” It seems that these three important steps in a man’s life go hand in hand with each other, and all three fit together to form a very definite pattern. The first and the third decision seem to be the most closely related of the three, especially so if a man has chosen the ministry as his profession. The Bible states: “Man can not serve two masters.” (Luke 16:13.) This brings us to the decision, and perhaps the greatest decision a man must make, and that is, to serve God. A person, in order to serve God, must not only live a good Christian life and set an example for others to follow; he must also be prepared to give up the many comforts of life. It is one thing to make a decision for God and another to follow it through. A servant of God is not promised any smooth roads on which to travel, but rather, he is promised many obstacles which may seem very formidable at times. Among these obstacles are persecu tions, grief, and sufferings, both physical and mental. Winston Churchill, in his most famous speech of World War II promised the people of England “blood, sweat, tears” and suffering and a long tiresome road to victory. This is more or less what is in store for the followers of God and Christ when they take up the cross and decide to follow Him. It is quite a difficult thing to explain sometimes why a person takes up the cross and becomes a servant of God. It may be that he seems lost in this complex world, or he may be tired from searching for something unknown and finds it in God, or he may have seen quite a bit of human suffering and will try to do all in his power to right this suffering by serving God. These are only a few of the reasons why a man will leave everything behind to follow Christ. The portion of Holy Scripture which may very well be the turning point in the lives of many who choose to serve God above all may be found in the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Chapter 10, verses 37-39: “He that loveth father and mother more than me is not worthy of me . . . he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me, is not worthy of me ... he that findeth his life shall lose it, and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” The second decision which confronts man seems to be one which presents itself more than anything else in life; perhaps even more so than the first and the third. Although a person is entirely free to choose from all three fields of decision; this decision should be made with much consideration. Most important of all, a man should face the fact that, contrary to popular belief, man’s best friend is not his dog, but rather, his wife, who will share all his burdens, cares, and strife; a person who will stick with him through thick and thin, through good and bad, on the ups and downs of life’s highway, on the smooth road of happiness, success, and good fortune; and will also be willing to share the rough way of sorrow, disappointment, and despair. While the choice of vocation and service may be changed in later life, the selection of a wife may not be so simple. Choosing of one’s life-mate should be made with the understanding that marriage is just as important as one’s vocation and devoted service to God, for marriage is nothing but undying love, and the overcoming of osbtacles by having faith and trust in God.
