MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13 (Psalm 130:3). If He spares them, or some of them, for some reason or other, it will be of grace, and merely of grace, and not because it was deserved. But this much WE KNOW. For everyone who reads the Word of God today THERE IS NO POSSIBLE EXCUSE. As you read these words, Jesus YOUR ONLY SAVIOR is being presented to YOU. Any objection that is now raised on the basis of the possible future of the heathen or Jews is, at base, an attempt to evade the matter of your responsibility for a personal decision. Such objection, therefore, should be answered not with theories about matters concerning which there may be some reasonable doubt, but with a direct personal confrontation of the questioner with the claim of the Lord Jesus upon HIM. “Sinners, turn, why will ye die? God, your Savior, asks you why; God who did your souls retrieve, Died Himself that you might live: Will ye let Him die in vain? Crucify your Lord again? Why, ye ransomed sinners, why Will ye slight His grace, and die? — Charles Wesley, 1756.---------------•---------------OUR NEW CATECHISM The Reverend Stephen Kovács of Akron, Ohio, performed a great task, fulfilled an ever deepening need and desire, with the publication of the “HUNGARIAN REFORMED CATECHISM”. The formerly used catechism has long been out of print and we had been forced to borrow a handbook of our Christian teachings for the purpose of preparing confirmation classes. No matter how good these books of our fellow Christians, or how close to ours the teachings of a sister-denomination may be, it is reassuring to use our own. Though the author had undertaken this work on his own, urged by a few of us, its recognition by our Church is surely forthcoming. This book may be well used not only by the “free” churches but any of the Hungarian Reformed congregations, although it is a strictly Hungarian Reformed catechism based on the Holy Bible and our two accepted standards of faith, the Second Helvetic Confession and the Heidelberg Catechism. One of the outstanding features of this book is that the well-chosen scriptural references are printed in full, serving a twofold purpose; a treasure of memory verses and an undeniable proof of the divine foundation of our doctrines. The language is clear and graded to the confirmation age, but, of course, usable by anyone who is preparing for church membership. There is yet an other use for this little book (96 pages, pocket size) and that is by a large section of our now English speaking members who studied our doctrines in Hungarian at an early age. This catechism may well serve as a refresher course for those who desire a greater and more firm knowledge of what our Church teaches; it will well serve parents, too, who are constantly being questioned by their knowledge-seeking youngsters. The catechism may be obtained through your own church office or direct from the author (1027 Haynes St., Akron 7, Ohio) for one dollar. CLERGY AND LAITY: THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES was pictured as a “partnership between the clergy and laiity” in a report issued in New York oni February 25th. It showed that 4,230 men and women, drawn from all sections of the country, and many vocations, participate in shaping policy and program of the cooperative organization of 30 communions, with almost an equal division between CLERGY AND LAITY. The council said there were 2,165 clergymen and 2,065 lay men and women on the rolls of the Council’s leadership on Feb. 1, 1956. The 4,230 persons are drawn from the 30 DENOMINATIONS that constitute the 'Council, now carrying on the work of thirteen interdenominations that existed prior to 1951, iand 28 other communions that participate in one or more departments. Their designation as members of various boards or committee is made or approved by the denominations, iand the numerical strength of each communion is based on proportional representation. The Council itself has 20 OFFICERS HEADED BY A CLERGYMAN, DR. EUGENE CARSON BLAKE OF PHILADELPHIA. Eleven officers including several vice president, the treasurer and recording secretary are laymen. NINE ARE CLERGYMEN. LAYMEN OUTNUMBER THE CLEGY TWO TO ONE ON THE BUSINESS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE which supervises the Council’s finances and the administration of a $13,000,000 budget. Out of 93 members, 62 are laymen, including the chairman and vice chairman. There are 86 laymen and 33 clergy on the 119 member committee which directs the affairs of the Department of the Church and Economic Life. The general departments of United Church Women and the younger United Church Men are supervised by Boards o fManagers. The 348 member board of UCW has 272 lay women and 76 clergymeni The United Church Men’s Board is composed of 297 laymen and 16 clergymen. WASHINGTON TORONTO PÉNZÁTUTALÁS Legolcsóbban! Leggyorsabban!
