12 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ pressing need for more teachers, buildings and increased facilities to meet the rising tide of college students. “All Christian colleges today are facing difficulties,” said Dr. Hubert C. Noble, general director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Christian Higher Education, which sponsors the observance. Their funds have fallen far behind the sharp increase in the costs of education. Most of them need to improve their present buildings and add new ones. The average churchrelated college has capital needs of five to 15 million dollars. “Churches are helping their colleges all they can. The Methodist Church plans to raise $38,000,000 for its 67 colleges in the next four years. The Presbyterian U.S. Church is aiming for $37,000,000 during the next year and the Presbyterian USA Church is also working to raise its level of support for its 40 colleges.” Religious and college leaders consider it most fitting that the United States should observe National Christian College Day, since the early colleges in this country were founded by Protestant Christian chinches because they believed that an educated ministry was needed and that the religious faith of laymen must be intelligent and informed. Harvard was the first college founded — in 1636 — “to advance learning . . . dreading to leave an illiterate ministry when our present ministers shall lie in the dust.” Up to 1785 every college in America had been founded by the church. Today there are almost half a million students enrolled in Christian colleges, out of the total 2V2 million in colleges and universities. News for the English Section ... ___ The Christian Youth Club of Perth Amboy N.J., recently elected the following officers: President William E. Orosz, Vice President Helen Czető, Secretary Evelyn Ecker, Treasurer Elsie Szabó, Chaplain Steven Deák, Publicity Director Arlene Egry. The members will participate in a corporate Holy Communion on the first Sunday in May. Plans were made by the members to attend a retreat in Belvedere, N. J. with the participation of delegates from other churches. The purpose of this retreat on June 22-23-24 would be to deepen spiritual life and biblical knowledge. Men’s Club officers were elected in the Perth Amboy Church: President Stephen Orosz, Vice President John Marincsák, Treasurer John Tariska, Secretary Norman Bright, Chaplain George Tóth. The National Conference of the Bethlen Youth Federation will be held in Trenton N.J., on Labor Day weekend. The Executive Board and the local representatives met during March in the Trenton Church to draw plans for the Conference. The meeting in McKeesport Pa. last year was significant in bringing decision towards deeper spiritual requirements. It is the hope of everyone that the Conference this year will be even better: away from the world and from its desires and closer to the Lord and to His Word.
