September 2-4, 1954 NEW LIFE FOR THE REFUGEES ~ Thousands of refugees "came to America over the period of three years under the Refugee Relief Act. There are countless other refugees and escapees who still wait for asurers and good hearted Americans to bring them into the USA. Church World Service is a recognized voluntary agent, by the Administrator of the Act, to process the immigration of the refugees. But there is a definite need for assurer and local church to accept the responsibility for the resettlement of a refugee. The assurer must be an American citizen. Assurance Form DSR #8 must be filled and signed. One assurer may sign the employment and housing. Children and members of the family of the applicant are to be listed on the same asurance form. You may select a specific refugee (family) you wish to sponsor, or specify the type of refugee (family) you desire. Suitable employment and housing must be assured. The assurer need not himself be the employer and furnish the housing. But the proposed employment must be certified by the nearest State Employment Service. The clearence orders must be attached to the assurance form. (Housekeeper, household worker, gardener, domestic servant.) This assurance is primarily a moral one, and this assurance is not a contract. The refugee is not bound to remain in the employment described and the employer is free to discharge the refugee if he should prove to be unqualified or unfit for the work. The assurance should be certified by a local church. When all this has been done, the application one original and three copies plus the certificate from the Employment Service must be sent to the Church World Service, Resettlement Committee, 156 Fifth Ave., New York 10, N. Y. Then the application will be forwarded to the Visa Office of the State Department in Washington, D. C. The applicant will be interviewed, checked and examined by Consular and Immigration officials. Arrangement will be made for transportation of the refugee in the form of a loan to cover the cost. The sponsor will be notified in advance to take care of the transportation from New York port to the point of destination. The estimate time is from six to twelve months from the time of the assurance is submitted and the refugee arrives. There are many problems and difficulties but life is at stake. Therefore we must help, because this is a Christian service.-------------o------------Eastern Classis Conference The third quarterly conference of 1954 of the Youth Federation of the Free Magyar Reformed Church was held in Roebling, New Jersey, on Sunday, October 31, 1954. Since this day was both Reformation Day and Hallowe’en, it was observed both spiritually and socially. On the spiritual side, the Rev. Sherman S. Robinson, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Florence, New Jersey, spoke on “Life’s Greatest Discovery,” Jesus Christ.----------o---------I have now disposed of all my property to my family.
