296 MAGYAR CSERKÉSZ No. 14. THE HUNGARIAN FOLK-SONG. The Hung. Boy Scouts Association has just published its latest Song Book (101 Hungarian Folk Songs, Bpest 1929.) thus opening the wonderful territory of Hungarian peasant music for the Scouts. Why are our Scouts so much in for folksongs ? We can’t do better than quote Béla Bartók in answer. We take the following lines from his fundamental work on Hungarian peasant music : „Our peasants’ songs are examples of the highest artistical perfection. If due allowance is made to their smaller proportions, they are as accomplished as the greatest masterpieces of music. They are a wonderful example of how a musical idea can be perfectly expressed by the most modest means, within the limits of most unpretentious form“. Kodály, are well known throughout the musical world. The two Songs are examples of two different stiles prevailing in our popular music. No. 1 stands for primaeval Hungarian music. Such songs are still remembered by old men and women mainly in Transsylvania. They must be sung in a rather unscrupulous manner as to measure. (Poco rubato; molto expressivo.) The second song is an example of a more recent Hungarian musical style. This style is quite unlike that of any other race. It dates from the 19th century and therefore is a monument to the original creative power of Hungarian music. The measure of this soldiers’ marching song is Tempo di marcia. , These songs worked a great influence on the music of the neighbouring races (Slovakian, Ruthenian, Moravian), who borrowed many of our melodies to words of their own languages.
