10MAIN TRENDS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN HUNGARY DURING THE SEVENTH FIVEYEAR PLAN PERIOD Within the framework of the uniform work program of the elaboration of the Seventh Five-Year Natio na 1 Economic Plan the subconception "Main Trends of Scientific Research" has been drawn up jointly by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the National Office for Technical Development and the National Planning Office, Based on the analysis of the Sixth Five-Year Plan period it can be pointed out that the National Long-Range Plan of Scientific Research and the National Medium-Range R+D Plan have contributed to meeting the goals of science policy. According to the long-range plans of scientific research demands for the expansion of the frontiers of knowledge on nature and society and the application of research findings on a social scale will be growing up till the year 2000, Having enumerated the more important research projects and the main scientific research trends in the medium run /i.e. in the Seventh Five-Year Plan period/ the paper provides some information on the amount of estimated R+D expenditures. Beyond any doubt, during this period the working out of the modernization program of research facilities and the stock of machines and instruments and, in some fields, their definite improvement are badly needed. The unified legal arrangement of the systems of research institutions is under process and the system of 'scientific research finance wants some improvement, too. During this period the role of initiations at the institutional and enterprise level will be growing both in research planning and management. SIMILARITIES AND DISSIMILARITIES IN BENELUX SCIENCE This paper focusses on Belgian and Dutch science policies but touches upon the problems of Luxemburg, too , and discusses the responsibilities of science councils.lt can be said that equality was typical of Belgian and Dutch science financing. However, putting the principle of selection into force was necessitated by the economic recession after the mid-seventies. In the Netherlands conditional financing defending research projects approved by national committees has been introduced in academic science support. In Belgium within the framework of the concerted action program the activities of some outstanding research teams are sought to be supported. In both countries the state of academic research is deteriorated by religious dividedness; to this in Belgium the Flemish and Walloon conflicts may be added. Both countries try to find ways to reach world standard in science. In the Netherlands Philips' achievements, in Belgium IMEC's and its core-body ESAT ' s results are world famous.
