He was a poet and calligrapher. According to sources he was employed as scribe in the Imperial Chancery of State (Divan-i hümayun), and later on earned his living with calligraphy. C EVRÎ was a member of the Mevlevi order and wrote a Mesnevi in twenty-two different styles. He was influenced by great poets like B AKÎ, N EFÎ, M EVLÂNA, E NVERÎ and U RFÎ. Other works by the same author: Divan, Selim-name (1627), Melhame (written 1635, printed 1877), Hall-i hakikat (written 1647, printed 1852), Aynü'l füyuz (written 1647, printed 1852), Nazm-ı niyaz (1648). Besides that, there is the well-known work in two volumes Cevrî tarihi. In the section Sebeb-i te'lif (the reasons for writing) C EVRÎ declares that H AKAN Î 'S Hilye was his model, and enumerates the attributes of the four caliphs in verse.
