Leyla vü Mecnun is composed in 3,096 beyit s in mesnevi form and constitutes the most famous and most beautiful examples of this topic in Turkish literature. F UZULÎ must have seen and read the adaptations of the subject before writing his own work; especially NIZAMÎ 's version served as an example to him. The work begins with three quatrains (rubai) followed by a prologue (dibace) in prose. Next there come a miinacat, a tevhid, a na't, a Mi'raciye, a kaside with praisings of the Prophet, a poem addressed to a cupbearer and a chapter Sebeb-i nazm-t kitab (reasons for writing), followed by the praising of Kanunî Sultan Süleyman (1520-1566). After a praising on Veys Bey, the work finally turns to the story. There are numerous manuscripts of Leyla vü Mecnun in Turkey as well as in other collections. The oldest copy, dating from 987/1579, is to be found in the Topkapi Palace Library. This copy of the collection of the LHAS was made by Abdurrahman Galib Efendi (94a) in 1245/1829-1830 (94a).
