[37/5(79); 2072], Stein Photo 38/1 Photographs in Chitral District, 1906 20 photographic prints sent to Stein by an unidentified correspondent. The sender evidently met Stein while the latter was passing through Chitral at the start of the 2 nd Central Asia Expedition and the prints, captioned in red ink on the reverse, show inscriptions from Chitral and Stein's expedition. A possible candidate is Captain Robert Walter Edmund Knollys, Political Agent in Chitral, whom Stein notes as having supplied him with information on local remains (Serindia, vol. 1, p. 34) and with whom he stayed for several days in Chitral. Another possibility is Captain George Henry Sawyer of the Chitrali Scouts, whom Stein also met at this period (see Ruins of Desert Cathay, vol. 1, p. 45). While the photographs were evidently taken in 1906, the note with print 20, mentioning Stein's Serindia, indicates that they were sent to Stein some time after the publication of that work in 1921. 1.
