FALCONER John and RUSSELL-SMITH Lilla: Catalogue of Photographs Taken or Collected by Sir Aurel Stein
CATALOGUE OF PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN OR COLLECTED BY SIR AUREL STEIN John Falconer and Lilla Russell-Smith INTRODUCTION This addendum to the first volume of the Catalogue of the Collections of Sir Aurel Stein in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Budapest, 2002) lists a significant addition of over 2,500 photographs taken or collected by Stein in the course of his career and only discovered subsequent to the publication of that work. While a portion of this new material duplicates photographs already catalogued in the original project, it also contains a substantial number of new prints and it has therefore been considered worthwhile to list and publish it, in the interests of making available a comprehensive inventory of the very important visual resources relating to the life and work of Sir Aurel Stein held in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. While several institutions (most notably the British Library, London) hold extensive collections of Stein photographs, the Budapest collections contain much that is unique and which provide important photographic documentation in relation to Stein's own life and the archaeology, topography, historical geography and peoples of Central Asia and the Middle East. It seems clear that this new material once formed part of the main collection of photographs listed in the first volume of the catalogue and became separated from it at some stage. Stein Photo 37/8 in this listing, for instance, supplies almost all the missing images from the earlier Stein Photo 11 and the material must once presumably have formed a single collection. Such instances of broken collections have been noted in the introductions where identified. The format of the present listing of photographs follows as far as possible that of the original catalogue. These newly-found collections have in most cases been kept in the original batches in which they were found, since this generally appears to reflect Stein's own ordering of the material. In the case of miscellaneous loose prints, these have been gathered together by broad subject area, such as the collection of portraits of friends and colleagues acquired by Stein in the course of his career, which can be found at Stein Photo 44/1 of this catalogue. The ordering and numbering of these batches of prints is as far as possible chronological, with an overall collection 61
