FALCONER John and RUSSELL-SMITH Lilla: Catalogue of Photographs Taken or Collected by Sir Aurel Stein
JOHN FALCONER - LILLA RUSSELL-SMITH in Photo 39/2. The prints in Stein Photo 39/1 and 39/2 are numbered in sequence 14 and 1-403 for this catalogue (lacking prints 188, 189, 195). Additional reference numbers, listed below in square brackets, also appear on the prints. The first of these, starting at 29, is a running number through the series, with some breaks. The second, starting at 857 is the reference number assigned by the Archaeological Survey of India. The third reference number, not present in all prints, may refer to Stein's own numbering: those bearing the 'P.O' prefix (mainly quarter-plate prints), are probably Stein's own work. The majority of the views were probably taken by a Survey photographer accompanying Stein. See also introduction to Stein Photo 39/2. 1. Takht-i-Bahi. [35/863; 02] Stein Photo 39/2 Archaeological Survey of India, Frontier Circle photographs, 1911-1912 Collection of 400 mainly half-plate printing-out paper prints, arranged in 11 envelopes, of archaeological remains, mainly at Takht-i-Bahi and Sahri-bahlol, but also including views at Charsadda, Tangi, Palai, Shahkot, Jamal-garhi and Tareli. The collection is a continuation of Stein Photo 13/2 (listed in volume 1 of the catalogue), which contains prints 1-36 in the series and from which it has presumably become separated. The photographs form part of the record of sites and excavations compiled by the Frontier Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India for the period 19111912. Stein was Superintendent of the Frontier Circle at this time, although for much of 1911 he was in Europe, making preparations for his forthcoming 3 r d Central Asian Expedition. 1 le returned to his post in late December and much of his time for the remainder of the year, until the end of March 1912, was spent on tour at the sites illustrated in this collection. For a detailed account of the excavations at these sites, see his Annual Report of the Archaeological Survey of India. Frontier Circle. 191112 (Peshawar, 1912). A number of prints also have additional identifying notes pencilled on the reverse. 1. Takht-i-Bahi. Feet of stucco colossi, south wall, T.XX. [37/865] 2. Takht-i-Bahi. Colossal stucco head, T.XX.
