21 SUMMARY THE FUNCTIONS OF THE LIBRARY OF THE ACADEMY ,,At its January 27, 1961 session the Presidium of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences discussed the situation of the Library and passed a resolution about its perspectives. This resolution lays down the orientation of the development of the Library, provides a foundation for further work, and in broad outlines defines the position of the Library as a scientific institution within the Academy and in Hungarian scientific life." Based on the above mentioned resolution, the article sketches the Library's programme to be developed. In its resolution the Presidium stated that the academic character of the Library is to be determined — equivalent with its holdings — by its functions and services. The article discusses the integration on the Library into the activities of the Academy in four respects: 1. as the central library of the Academy and as a scientific institution it has to assist with the scientific information, the activities of the Academy concerning science policy and the research management; 2. as the centre of the library network of the Academy it has to manage and organize the libraries of the research institutes, so that they should serve research in unison with the central library, taking the differences in the disciplines into consideration; 3. as one of the large leading Hungarian scientific libraries it takes its share of work in the national scientific library division, and thus looks after the collecting tasks devolving on it according to the nationwide division in the areas of classical studies, philology, oriental studies, etc.; 4. complementing library services, it includes research work in its planning in the areas of the history of science, librarianship and several disciplines.
