AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTION The papers in this volume tell the history of the progress of an institution, the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Considering the time of their writing, they should span a period of a quarter of a century, but in fact they embrace much more in time. They show, in flashes, much of the past of the 160 years-old Library of the Academy, most of which is necessary for understanding the last 25 years of the institution. They also sketch the prospective future of this library, constituting at the same time a chapter in Hungarian cultural history. The 19 articles, studies, collected in this volume are variations on a theme, including, inevitably, some overlapings. Their text is virtually unchanged (apart from some, mainly stylistic, polishing). The footnotes by amplifying the original texts, connect the time of their conception with the publication of the present volume and thus clarify, where necessary, the continuity.
