141 The father - the only person who constantly believed In his son's great vocation - was the most beloved person on earth for Aurel. When he studied abroad he wrote to his father weekly, after his father's death he sent his weekly letters to E. Stein, later to E. Stein's widow. Nothing remained of the original letters, we know only those that were published under the title: "Eine Eerienreise nach Srinagar (Kashmir) " and were dedicated to his father who died during the time of this journey (see the title-page in facsimile on page 57). His mother died just before he left Budapest, Aurel preserved her last letter as sacred and took it with him to India: These were the factors that enabled Aurel Stein to devote himself entirely to his studies and preparations. He started his journey to India as an accomplished scholar with extraordinary knowledge of language, of history and of geography, with an experience in cartography, alpinism, with a skill in photography etc. His traditional good luck, so often mentioned by the members of his family, never departed him: when he arrived to India, he immediately got a post at the University of Lahore.
