255 Mrs Susan Fráter Documents of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in the Manuscript Department Summary The present work is a collection of manuscript sources bearing on the history of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The complete material is located in the Manuscript Department of the library. The papers which make up the collection are of diverse origin and are arranged in different orders, but every one of them concerns the functioning of the library. When describing the single documents we have supplied a subject-reference as well. As regards the papers' origin, contents and rules of procedure, we have divided the collection into two major parts. The first is The collection of the library's documents , which constitutes a separate group within the Manuscript Department. The other part is titled: Additional documents of the library in the Manuscript Department. In the first part the papers are listed in two groups. The first group consists of official documents. The bulk of these come from the routine-work of the library and include papers on management, organization, acquisition as well as reports, projects and letters related to individuals, institutions and authorities. In the second group are included the miscellaneous documents. These are files, accounts, catalog-fragments and, in addition, bound records like old catalogs, registers of acquisition, accession and lending and other reports. The official papers are arranged in a yearly numerical order between 1831 and 1895, and under thematic headings between 1896 and 1949. There are four thematic groups: 1, Library management. 2, Acquisition. 3, Lending. 4, Other records. In addition to the official records originally entered in files, several library documents have also been found. A part of them was unregistered and unmarked. The minor and bound analectas make up the group of miscellaneous documents. These come under two sub-groups according to their size: a, Documents which came to light later, b, Bound manuscripts. The collection of library documents in its present form is a complete collection. It is most unlikely that any further records should come to light. The second part is the Additional documents of the library in the Manuscript Department . These include 1, The library documents preserved in the Old Archives of the Academy (RAL), which are related to the international loan, exchange activities, the personnel and financial affairs of the library and the increase of library holdings. 2, Documents of the old subject catalog and in the material indexed Ms (in numerus currens). The volume contains an index of names as well.
