SUMMARY One manuscript copy of each dissertation submitted to the National Postgraduate Degree Board and not published at the tima of its defence is stored and put at the researchers' disposal by the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Over the last fifteen years the Manuscript Department has issued five catalogs of theses defended between 1952 and 1970. However, instead of yet another booklet covering the period from 1971, we decided to bring out a cumulative volume which would include works written in the last 25 years. The cumulative catalog here published is, like the previous ones, a catalog of stock; it contains only those theses which are to be found in manuscript form in the Manuscript Department. Excluded from it are the published works on the strength of which a degree was granted and candidates and doctors whose works for some reason or other did not get into the collection. The lay-out of the catalog follows the classification of subjects which served as basis for the Board to accept the given dissertation. The earlier catalogs contained the decimal numbers of the dissertations; this has now been abandoned. We have also decided not to mark the names of opponents, as the manuscripts of opponents' critiques are not kept in the Manuscript Department. One may encounter many inconsistencies in the catalog-entries — primarily in the orthography of technical terms and alien words — for the catalog reproduces the title of dissertations literally in the form given by the authors and accepted by the Board. Dates of year generally indicate the date marked on the manuscript as the completion of the work. If the date of year is in square brackets, then the manuscript does not contain this information, so the date in brackets yields the date of acceptance. The volume comprises the dissertations accepted up to January 31 1975. The catalog of subjects is complemented by an author index.
