THE ACADEMY'S NETWORK OF RESEARCH INSTITUTES In order to perform its tasks as defined by Act XL of 1994, the Academy maintains research institutes (centres, groups, laboratories) engaged in basic and/or applied research, and in some cases in experimental research and development as well. It also supports special research groups affiliated with higher educational institutions (mainly universities). The number of research institutes is 49, and that of university-affiliated research groups is 139.
