THE ORGANIZATION AND THE OPERATION OF THE ACADEMY Committee on Environmental Sciences Chairman: ATTILA MESKÓ, O.M. Secretary: IMRE SZEMES, C.SC. THE GOVERNING BOARD This body co-ordinates the work of the Academy's top executives in conjunction with representatives from branches of science. Its membership consists of the leading officials and the representatives of each of the three major fields of study (i.e. mathematics and natu­ral sciences, life-sciences, and social sciences). The Board sets up standing committees to solve special tasks. These are: the Committee on International Rela­tions, and the Social Welfare Committee. KÁLMÁN PANNONHALMI , Secretary of the Panel COMMITTEES OF THE PRESIDENT AND THE SECRETARY-GENERAL In addition to above-mentioned committees of the Ge­neral Assembly and the Presidium, the President and the Secretary-General shall set up special, permanent or ad hoc, joint committees for the solution of certain top­ical problems or problems of common concern. Secretary: MARIANN TARNÓCZY Committee on Social Relations Chairman: PÉTER HORN, O.M. Secretary: B. ISTVÁN SZABÓ, PH.D. Art Collection Council Chairmen: G. BÉLA NÉMETH, O.M. LAJOS VAYER, O.M. SCIENTIFIC SECTIONS Scientific sections follow closely, promote and evaluate all activities conducted in their respective fields of study; take a stand on scientific questions as well as in matters concerning science policy and research organisation; give their opinion on the activities of the Academy's research institutes and on those of the university chairs and other research units supported by the Academy; and participate in the procedure of awarding the title of Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In performing their duties, the scientific sections rely heavily on the work of special committees composed of academicians and other elected non-academician mem­bers. Their number is ... at present. Each section is headed by a chairman, elected from among the members of that section for a term of three years. The Academy's scientific sections are as follows: I.
