GREAT COMPOSITIONS 1934-1938 1934 1 January - He writes Universal Edition, and visits his mother and aunt. 3 January - He gives two private lessons. - The New Hungarian Music Society organises a Bartok evening at the Music Institute of Higher Education (Music Academy) without Bartoks participation. Programme: Tót Folk Songs and Four Old Hungarian Folk Songs (Choral Society of Buda), 3 Etudes (Lajos Kentner), 8 Duos (Tivadar Országh and Sándor Saigo), 6 songs from 20 Hungarian Folk Songs (Mária Basilides and György Kosa), and Quartet No. 2 (performed by the Országh-Friss String Quartet). 4 January - He brings to his mother and aunt’s the reviews of the previous evening with which he is satisfied. 10 January - A Bartok-Zathureczky evening in Nyíregyháza, at the Bessenyei Circle. Bartok plays Brahms’ Sonata in A major, his own Rhapsody No. 1, Beethovens Kreutzer Sonata, and Gertlers transcription of Sonatina with Zathureczky; his solo programme: Ballad and Old Hungarian Dances from 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, Rondo No. 1, Evening in Transylvania, Bear Dance, and Allegro barbaro. Bartok hasn’t had a public appearance in Budapest since 5 May 1930. 359
