MAGYAR ŐSTÖRTÉNETI MŰHELYBESZÉLGETÉS ABSTRACT: Applicability of historical linguistics in the field of prehistory: possibilities and limitations. The different trends of the modern history of historical linguistics over two centuries have taken very divergent approaches towards the relationship of linguistic affinities and ethnicity. In this paper I will briefly try to present what historical linguistics is able to reveal with reasonable certainty, and what outcomes - relevant from the perspective of prehistory - this discipline is expected to achieve by using different and partly innovative research methods. I will also make some observations about the evolutionist comparative linguistic methods, which - in my view - definitely lead to an interand intradisciplinary impasse. However, speaking of limitations, it is important to underline that neither historical linguistics nor any other prehistorically relevant discipline offers a prehistoric crystal ball. I will try to summarise the (pre)historical strengths and weaknesses of historical linguistics, ethnography, archaeology and archaeogenetics in a short, experimental table, restating the argument that relevant new information about Hungarian prehistory can only be obtained via an interdisciplinary approach and with a thorough analysis of the converging and diverging results of the other disciplines.
