Abstract

The diocese of Veszprém was led by Gyula Czapik between 1939 and 1944. Until 7lh May 1943 as Bishop and then as Archbishop of Eger, he was an apostolic governor until March 1944. On March 5th, 1944 József Mindszenty, papal prelate, Abbot of Zalaegerszeg was appointed Bishop of Veszprém - going against the government and Cardinal Jusztinján Serédi. The study introduces the potential candidates, arguments articulated for and against originating from various interests. Finally, the appointment of József Mindszenty was pushed through due to the connections of Count János Mikes Titular Bishop, former Bishop of Szombathely.
