An office-holder gentry family of the late medieval Zala county, the Háshágyis

The author outlines the history of one of the major wealthy, office-holder gentry families of the late medieval - early modern age Zala county. The family members of four generations mentioned in the charters are presented in this study. They did not belong to the main players of the era, but the career opportunities of the gentry and the various ways leading to social and economic advancement can be seen through them.

In the Sigismund age the Háshágyis frequently appear in the charters after the stabilisation of land tenure in Zala county. As a vassal of the Szécsis’, Dénes raised the family from among the anonymous lesser nobility in the middle of the 15lh century and

laid the foundation of family wealth in their service. His son, István, became a national office-holder in the intellectual field, serving as a protonotary during the age of King Matthias. István’s brother, Mihály, was the deputy-lieutenant of Zala county in 1464-65. His son was this certain Dénes, who fulfilled the role of the family at the beginning of the 16lh century, first as a noble vassal in the service of the Kanizsai family, then of the Nádasdy family.

Through marriages, the family was first related to the Akosházi Sárkány family, then to almost all of the lesser noble families of Zala belonging to the Nádasdys’ sphere of influence.
