Sándor Asbóth in the Hungarian War of Independence (1848-1849) When working at the Bega Canal in Timisoara in spring-summer 1848, Asbóth had the opinion that in the new situation of the country the complete canalization of the Bega, according to his own plans, could at last get started. But instead, he had to settle some grave personal issues in connection with his position in May-June 1848, and was promised to get a job at the ministry later. At the beginning of July he was allowed to return to the Bega temporarily, while he was settling his problems. Although the thought of joining the army crossed Asbóth’s mind many times during that summer when he saw the deteriorating political-military situation, he continued his engineering work for the time being. In mid-November, however, Asbóth had to flee Timisoara because of the aulic Timisoara War Council and the Comité, and in early December he joined the Honvéd Army as a general staff captain. During the fights in the Banat he took part in the attack against Tomasevac on 5 December. At the end of January he was appointed fortification director at Komárom. Despite his several efforts he was unable to get to Komárom until the victories of the Spring Campaign. Between two unsuccessful tries he served as Klapka’s adjutant in the first legion. Asbóth took part of the fortification work before the battle at Kápolna, in Tiszafüred and at the Bakta Pass; and with the help of seven common hussars from the Hunyadi Hussar Regiment he took a canon from the enemy in the battle at Mezőkövesd. During the Spring Campaign it was quite probably Asbóth who built the bridge over the River Garam for the Honvéd Army before the battle at Nagysalló. When arriving in Komárom it turned out that Zsigmond Thaly had already got Asbóth’s position. Therefore Asbóth returned to Debrecen with the interim War Minister Klapka, and worked there at the ministry in May, now as a major. From here he went to work to the military department of Kossuth’s governor office at the beginning of June. He became head of this department and Kossuth’s aide-de-camp until the end of the independence war, during the last days he was already a Lieutenant-Colonel. After his resignation, Kossuth set off to the Turkish border in Asbóth’s company and they left Hungary together.
