The third life of a razor box

The box was made in 1841, it held razors, and then when it became useless, it was just lying on a shelf in the bathroom. It was not thrown out, it was esteemed, while inherited from father to son. The third life of the box began when Imre Bálint donated it to the Göcseji Museum in 2010. The restorer and author of this study shows not only the process of cleaning the box, but also gives an overview about the ethnographic collection of the museum, highlights historical and technical details and knowledges. The collection has fifty five items decorated with sealing wax including twelve razor boxes. This special method of decoration

decorated with sealing wax

was very labour-intensive. The pre-carved, deepened patterns were filled with colour and hot sealing wax. Before cleaning the razor box was monochrome, dark brown because of the accumulated dusty, greasy dirt, its decoration was hardly visible. After the cleaning test the restorer loosened the dirt with aqueous solution of fatty alcohol sulfate, which was removed from the surface mechanically with a scalpel and microscopic magnification. The work process can be seen well in the photos.
