The tomb sculpture of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl (1884-1975) was one of the most important and internationally renowed Hungarian sculptors of the twentieth century. Perhaps the least known tendency of his more and more complete and imposing artistic ouvre are the tomb monuments. Most of these can be found in Budapest, in Kerepesi and Farkasréti Cemeteries, but there are also many more examples of this kind of art in other cemeteries. A part of them are known as an independent art sculpture (such as Ad Astra, Madonna), others are reliefs or bust portraits and also there are sometimes life-size sculptures, which are not known from other locations, but they are particularly interesting for us. These are partly allegorical figures referring to the deceased’s occupation, partly grieving and partly religious or mythological figures. We know approximately forty six tomb monuments, but the real figure is probably higher. However, Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl was not a tomb sculpture maker, but as a representative sculptor he has decorated different kinds and types of tombs in a manner required by the customer. His tomb sculptures do not show individual character not only because of the classical style of Strobl’s monuments and in this case also the choice of topic fits to the usual (and expected) trend. In addition he often carried out confusing symbolism required by the costumers, but also because their types are varied. It is clearly visible, that the artist has placed different emphasis on his tomb sculptures and tomb reliefs. Several times quite schematic and meaningless works came out under his hands, while in other cases it is striking that he took care of the elaboration. Although his main works have been mainly made not in this genre, some significant sculptures increase his prominence as an artist of this area. Translated by Lívia Simmer
