Göcseji Múzeum, KISZ-hagyaték Children’s camping from Zala County at Lake Balaton in the 1970s and 1980s Organized summer camps for children have played an important role in the tourism around Lake Balaton in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Most of the camps and holiday houses with different maintenance were the so- called pioneer camps. The Association of Hungarian Pioneers, which had troops in every primary school in the Socialist era, organized the children’s summer holiday in large numbers and for a low cost. Many pupils have succeeded to get to Balaton first time in the course of school camping. Pioneer camp according to its program could be holiday camp, study camp or training camp of pioneer movement. In the 1950s and 1960s the children from Zala County have still camped out in the holiday resorts around the western basin of Lake Balaton. Each of these tent camps belonged to one school, later one district of the county, where different schools followed each other in the summer turns. Closing more smaller camps, the new central pioneer camp of the county was built at the beginning of the 1970s in Balatonberény with two- storey hostel, restaurant and sport establishments. The large camp for the purposes of pioneer and youth training in Balatongyörök has come into being at the same time, owned by KISZ (Young Communist League). Both camps were able to receive simultaneously hundreds of people, and the romantic tent camping practice has become a recreation with modem convenience. The Pioneer Association of Zala County has planned in advance, the programme of children camps in the 1970s and 1980s, drawing also the participant schools into it. The general pedagogical aims of summering were the forming of children collectives, displaying of communal activities and teaching the children for independence. Mainly playful programmes of sport, tourism, culture and education profiles were alternating with each other in turn, beside having bath in the lake as a steady item of the daily routine. In the study and training camps the lesson-like activities have run to half of the day with weaker recreation profile. Translated by Gabriella Haász
