Muzeológiai tanulmányok - Farkas Tamás: Zalaegerszeg küzdelme a vasútért (1865-1890)

254 Farkas Tamás Zalaegerszeg’s struggle for railway It was an important event in the development of the 19th century Zalaegerszeg, when the railroad reached the city. The most urbanised town in the county was Nagykanizsa, which had already become a railway junction in the 1860s. This improved their economic positions further, which was envied in the county seat. From 1865 onwards was the railway case, as the Kanizsa- Sopron line passed from the city only 7 km away. First they tried to use horse drawn trains, but the plan failed. In the 1870’s the city dealt with the plan of the Pápa-Csáktomya line, which preliminary works were completed in 1879. So when the 31st law article regarding the commuter railways in 1880 was published, it was rightly hoped: there would be rail. From 1885 Zala-Egerszeg had become a town with an organised council. Enthusiastic Mayor Károly Kovács also needed for four years to begin the railway construction. The personal assistance of Minister Gábor Baross was required to initiate the first steps in the autumn of 1889. The line was finally issued on the 19th October 1890.
