A travelling photographer, Ferenc Tömöry (around 1834-1890) Details to the photo story of Zala county

Two albums containing so-called cartes-de-visite (6x9 cm size) photographs mainly from the years 1860- 1870 got into the Göcseji Museum in 2006. Twenty albumen photos, subscribed by Ferenc Tömöry were found in them. The owner donated sixteen of them to the museum, because there were unknown people to him. Two photos show the photographer himself, on the back of one his signature also can be seen. These rare, dedicated image shows that the photographer had a friendly relationship with the family of János Grész (1812 - 1882) county chief medical from Csáktornya (now Cakovec, Croatia), whose son Károly became a mill owner in the county seat in Zalaegerszeg. From a passport request dated to 1862 it is known that Tömöry was bom in Szombathely and he had engineer and architect professions. In 1862 he must have been photographer, as he is included in

the list of taxpayers. But then began the career of the photographer Ferenc Knébel, who had great success in Szombathely. Therefore, instead of Vas county, Tömöry looked for livelihood in Zala county. According to newspapers reports he worked in Lendva (now Slovenia), Nagykanizsa, Letenye in 1865 and he also planned to make an album about Zala. He certainly worked in Zalaegerszeg in 1866. Around 1870 he settled in Croatia, where he has been recorded as a travelling photographer in literature. Tömöry is the first photographer in Zalaegerszeg who immortalized many members of the prominent citizens and noble families from Zala - Dervarics, Kerkápoly, Königmayer, Horváth, Klosovszky etc. - in his temporary atelier.
