Sormás- Török-földek. Településtörténeti áttekintés 107 Sopot culture (3 r d settlement phase) may be attested by a relatively greater diversity of house types. The inhabitation is concentrated in the territory of enclosure No. II, the houses belonging to the 3 r d settlement phase did not extend over the ditches of the enclosure in any sub-phase. Certain settlement phases (3al-a2, 3b) may be connected first of all to the establishment and restoration of the enclosure No. II (PI. 6. 1-7, PI. 7. 2-3, PI. 9. 1-6). During the heyday of the settlement of the Sopot culture not only single places of houses could be determined, but some household units consisting of the unity of a dwelling and an accompanying building of probably economic function (PI. 10. 1), one example of them could be identified in the settlement at Sormás-Mántai-dűlő. The 4 t h settlement phase can be connected to the formative and early Lengyel culture; the settlement features of both settlement phases (4a4b) were excavated in the territory of enclosure No. I, but the dwellings belonging to the 4th settlement phase were located inside enclosure No. II. also in that time. This fact reflects in an expressive way the functional change forthcoming in the relationship between ditchsystems and settlements (PI. 10. 2-8), during which the ditch-systems had lost their function of protecting the settlement at the beginning in a concrete, later in an even more symbolic, ritual sense. In the end, with the strengthening of this last mentioned character, a territorially separated sacral place of ritual-social function that is a rondell came to existence (Enclosure No. I., PI. 7. 1, PI. 8. 1-6). The establishment and the active use of enclosure No. I. establish the 4a settlement phase which on the basis of the find material may be well identified as the so called Sé horizon of the Lengyel culture that is to the formative phase of the culture (Lengyel la). However the settlement did not come to an end, as it is certified by the archaeological features in superposition with the ditches of enclosure No. I. and the find material, the settlement survived the formative (la) phase of the culture. The settlement at Sormás-Török-földek could subsist the beginning of the lb (early classical) phase of the Lengyel culture, which may be presumed by the presence of the Olad type figurines and the typological change of the find material.
