The rCaszters - A pharmacist family in Zalaegerszeg in the 19— 20 th centuries In a late 19 th century building located in the heart of Zalaegerszeg, a pharmacy has been run for over a hundred years to serve the local citizens. Based on press releases, archived documents, interviews made with two grandchildren and family photographs, this study is to show some mosaics from the life of a pharmacist family belonging to the elite of the local community at the time, reviewing the objects in the collection of the Göcseji Múzeum (Göcsej Museum) that can be associated with the pharmacy. Sándor Kaszter was born in Mezőpetri, County Szatmár (today Romania) in 1847. His father worked as an estate leader for the Károlyi Family. Sándor studied pharmacy and worked in a pharmacy in Vienna where he met Amália Rosonowsky, the daughter of a well-to-do family with a property lease business. After they got married they lived in Somorja (today Slovakia) for a short time, then in 1883 they bought the Holy Spirit Pharmacy in Zalaegerszeg which was founded in 1768. After his wife's early death in 1890 Sándor Kaszter did not get married again but devoted his entire life to his profession and family and gave the best education to his three cildren and eight grandchildren. Owing to his successful business policy he became one of the richest citizens of the town and a member of the Local Government. He bought a one-storey building in 1902 where he opened a pharmacy. His son, Ödön became ill at a young age and was later operated by a Vienna professor called Billroth. Inspite of all this, he obtained a Doctor's Degree in pharmacy at the University of Budapest. After graduation he returned home and being an excellent violinist he actively participated in the cultural life of the town. Fie gained reputation as a member of the Local Government and the County Administration Committee. Both father and son were prominent members of the Vas and Zala Division of the Association for Hungarian Pharmacists' where Ödön also acted as chair. The daughter of Sándor Kaszter, Amália married Antal Horváth, a young pharmacist employed by her father. They moved to Romhány, then to Kecskemét. They had four children. Unfortunately she lost her husband too soon and had to return to her father's home. Her son, Sándor Horváth also continued the family tradition. He participated in World War I and later opened his own pharmacy in Tolna in 1935. The younger daughter of Sándor, Ilona married a judge called Ferenc Horváth who later worked as a lawyer. They brought up three daughters and one son. The name Kaszter was not inherited, yet the black marble tomb in the town cemetery shall resemble the elder generations. Translated by Marianna Albert
