274 Kvassay Judit Arpádian Age and Late Medieval settlement-remains from Balatonmagyaród-Alsó-Kolon The archaeological site Kolon extends 3 kilometres long and 400-700 meters wide south of the village Balatonmagyaród, on the western slope of the Zalavár ridge rising above the marshland Kis-Balaton. Archaeological investigations were carried out at several parts of the site, within the frame of different research projects, from the 1970s onwards. The sitename was recorded in different forms each time. The author of the present paper collected data regarding the research programmes and depicted on a topographic map the discussed sites. In 1995 the observations during the construction of gas pipeline between Zalakomár and Balatonmagyaród proved definitely the inherence of the site-sections. In the middle of the site excavation was carried out preceding pipe lying, in 2002. 124 settlement features were revealed from the late Roman period, the Arpádian Age and the late Middle Ages. The few roman features were laying in the West-end of the excavated area, near Kis-Blaton. The remnants of the Arpádian Age settlement appeared on the whole surface from the slope as far as the waterside, concentrating however on the shoulder of the hill, Westwards from the modern public road. One pit contained early Arpádian Age ceramic finds, providing contribution to the determination of the size of the 10-11 th century settlement, the cemetery of which was excavated Northeast on the top of the hill. The most important feature, among the remains of the 12-13 th century settlement, was a well filled in with a nearby smithy's and a bone-cutter workshop's „industrial" refuse. The well served, very rich and unequalled find for industrial archaeological investigation. The excavated structures (renewed outhouses, granary pits) of the Late Medieval settlement had been built and used within a short period during the second half of the 16 th century, based on the evidence of the finds and the written sources.
