The Kerka valley microregional research programme, carried out between 1995 and 1998, has been already the third such investigation in Western Transdanubia. In the course of the field survey, sondages, larger scale excavations and scientific analyses, a series of new prehistoric sites could be found and processed. The full research results are to be published in a monographic form: (E. Bánffy, éd.): Archaeology and Settlement History of the Kerka valley - SWHungary. Antaeus 28. In this study, the dense neolithic and chalcolithic settlement history of the study area is discussed. As compared to the earlier, Little Balaton and Hahót valley programmes, some remarkable differences can be observed, regarding the transitional SCHIER 2000 Schier, W.: Vorgeschichtliche Besiedlung südliches Maindreieck. Similarities with the two earlier programmes can also be documented, such as the relatively large number of small, provisional BalatonLasinja settlements and the lack of Baden sites, due to the westerly location of the Kerka valley. In this way, the comparison of several „microregions" can lead to some general inferences about a larger, „macro-region", Zala County and Western Transdanubia.
