Előszó Foreword Zala megye Magyarország délnyugati sarkában, a Balaton és a Mura folyó közti területen fekszik. A bővizű patakokkal szabdalt dombos tájon évezredek óta szívesen települtek meg az emberek, különösen ott, ahol ősi kereskedelmi utak vezettek minden égtáj felé. Idáig jutottak a folyóvölgyek menti utakon az Európába dél felől érkező első földműves kultúrák, itt vezetett át az Adriát a Baltikummal összekötő ősi kereskedelmi útvonal, a Borostyánkő út, amely mellett római városok sora létesült. Köztük volt a mai Zalalövő helyén Salla, melynek nevét a hasonló nevü folyóval együtt ma is viseli e táj. Fenékpuszta rómaiak által épített hatalmas erődítménye a népvándorlás korában is fontos szerepet játszott, s a Zala folyó szigetén a mai Zala vár területén épült fel Nagy Károly frank birodalmának legkeletibb erőssége, Mosaburg. Zala megyét hosszában szelte át a magyar történelem egyik legfontosabb útvonala a tengerhez és Itáliába vezető nagy hadiút, melyen királyok, hadseregek, s kereskedők szekerei jártak. Nem csoda tehát, hogy a zalai föld mélye az emberi kultúra felbecsülhetetlen értékű emlékeit őrzi. A zalai régészet igazából az utóbbi mintegy harmad évszázad alatt tárta fel azt a hatalmas mennyiségű új információt nyújtó tárgyi anyagot, melynek legszebb darabjaiból összeállított válogatását veheti kezébe az olvasó. Számos olyan leletet találni, melyet először itt lehet megcsodálni. A neolit tárolóedény oldalát díszítő, kezét áldásra emelő nyolcezer éves alak, az ősi kultuszokban fontos szerepet játszó, nőket formáló agyagszobrocskák, a fémművesség első csodás alkotásai, római gladiátorszobor töredéke, a népvándorlás korának fantasztikus ékszerei mind-mind felidézik a magyarok bejövetele előtti időket. Ajánljuk mindenkinek a kiadványt, akit érdekel a történelem, a művészet, a zalai föld által megőrzött kulturális örökség. A kötet szerzői és kiadója reméli, hogy mindazok, akik kézbe veszik e kiadványt, ellátogatnak erre a csodálatos vidékre és eredetiben is megtekintik a zalai múzeumok itt bemutatott kincseit. Vándor László megyei múzeumigazgató Zala county lies in the south-western corner of Hungary, between the lake Balaton and the river Mura. In the hilly landscape, where affluent streams runs, people have liked to settle for thousands of years, especially along the ancient commercial roads, which run towards the four cardinal points from there. The first agricultural cultures reached the area along the rivers from the south. The Amber Road, the ancient commercial road, which connected the Adriatic Sea and the Baltic Sea lead through the region. Along that road a series of Roman towns were established. Among them there was Salla in the place of modern Zalalövő, which got its name from the river with the same name. This river gave its name to the county later as well. The great Roman fortress at Fenékpuszta played an important role not just in Roman times but in the Migration Period, as well. On the island of the river Zala has been built, Mosaburg where today Zalavár lies. Mosaburg was the easternmost fortification of the Frankish Empire of Charlemagne. The one of the most important military road of the Hungarian history crossed the county and continued to the Adriatic Sea and to Italy. Hence, it is not surprising that under the surface in Zala county there are precious remains of human culture. The material, which has been excavated in the last thirty years, provided a great amount of new information for the archaeology of the county. The most beautiful finds from this material are reproduced in the present publication. There are numerous finds, which have not been published before, like the Neolithic storage vessel with a figure on the wall, which raising his hand for blessing, the clay figurines, which played a role in the prehistoric cults, the first beautiful products of metal working, the fragment of the statue of a Roman gladiator or the fantastic jewellery of the Migration Period. They all evoke the time, before the Hungarian conquest. We dedicate this publication to all of those, who are interested in the history, art and the cultural heritage of Zala county. The authors and publisher of this volume hope, that those who read this publication will visit this wonderful region and will seethe treasures of the museums of Zala in original.
