Diether Kramer (Graz): New Aspects of the Early History of Styrian Settlements
Neue Aspekte zur älteren steirischen Siedlungsgeschichte NEW ASPECTS OF THE EARLY HISTORY OF STYRIAN SETTLEMENTS The matter of my lecture includes all fields of investigation which I myself, as the prehistorian of the territorial museum, came directly, or indirectly across during the last years in Styria. There is a great variety of themes from the settlements of the Lasinja culture up to the medieval Castles. But in this lecture I want to deal with prehistory alone. Nearly 15 years ago I had for the first time interpreted a number of prehistoric settlements, lying by far the greatest number in Middle Styria, as the sites of the Lasinja culture. Since that time the number of sites has increased to 40. The finds of the Lasinja culutre settlements indicate contacts with Western Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and through Carinthia to Upper Italy. The farthest north extensions of this culture may have reached the Enns valley in Styria. The number of the mountain settlements of the late Urnfield culture and of the early Hallstatt period has been remarkably multiplied in the recent years. New investigations and publications extend our knowledge of the Hallstatt period. The earlier finds of the LaTcne period had been published, new finds were discovered only in a small number. I hope, I coulol contribute with these pieces information to the history of the people along the Mura. 11
