Augsburg, Georg Balthasar Probst A PEEP-HOLE BOX FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM „LACZKÓ DEZSŐ' The 18th century peep-hole box in the MLD, together with the copperplate prints belonging to it, is probably a unique piece on the domestic scene. According to data in the inventories, it came into the museum collection in 1922 (as a home panorama). This designation of the object's function, however, does not correspond to reality. This author has looked into what would be the best object type with which to classify this artefact combination, where it may come from, how it may have been used, how it is related to cultural history. Other forms and instruments of picture viewing from the 18

th century are reviewed, and object types related to the peep-hole box are presented. In the description the construction of the box is precisely delineated and the 91 copperplate pictures associated with it are presented, together with the wooden box for storing them. In the concluding section, restoration of some of the individual copperplates is reviewed. 312
