Koncz Pál: Egy 19. századi bőrkötéses szótárkönyv restaurálása

PAL KONCZ THE RESTORATION OF A 19TH CENTURY LEATHER-BOUND DICTIONARY The present article gives account of the conservation) restoration of a dictionary of contemporary binding, published in 1801. This procedure was preceded by the material testing to discover the technique of manufactorung and the actual state of the book. Considering the results were chosen the materials for cleaning, conserving and complementing and then the restoration of the book, disassembled into elements was performed, according to the original binding technique. As a contrast to the wide-spread procedures, the complementing of the printed cotton material endpapers was carried out from the reconstructed printing block with paper printed with water colour and/or the leather covering the binding was prepared according to the procedure used already in the restoration of costume leathers with a polivynil acetete based substance. The documentation contains apart from the detailed analysis of the materials of the book, the technical and watermark description of the paper and, moreover, the drawing of the pattern of decoration tools used for the gilding of the spine of the library type binding. Beside the aspects of protection of works of art, the purpose of restoration work was the reconstruction of the volume as an again functioning library item. 464
