Becsehely, Bükkaljai-dűlő (Zala County) The site is situated in the southern part of Zala County, east from Becsehely on a north-east to south-western oriented natural elevation bordered by two streams. The site is well known from the archaeological literature as Becsehely I because on the western part of the site Nándor Kalicz led a probe-excavation between 1975 and 1976. As a result of the M7 motorway constructions a rescue excavation was launched between 2003 and 2004 and research could continue at the site. During this excavation project an area of 9800 nf was excavated and 1242 archaeological features came to light. The site was very intensively occupied and the archaeological features were very densely situated and their depth was also deeper than would usually be expected. Because of the favourable geographical conditions of the area the settlement was occupied through many periods although 90% of the features represent the Neolithic period. The Early Neolithic is represented by the Starcevo culture, the Middle Neolithic by the Keszthely group of the Transdanubian Linear Pottery Culture, the Sopot culture and Malo Korenovo type finds were also found. Zseliz and Sarka imported finds also came to light. The Late Neolithic is represented by the earliest, Sé phase of the Lengyel culture and Butmir type pottery fragments. The Middle Copper Age is represented by the Balaton-Lasinja culture and the Late Bronze Age by the Urnfield culture. A little amount of Roman and Árpádian period sherds were also found. In the majority of the cases the features of the different periods cross-cut each other and their material culture is mixed.
