Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)

64 PHYLUM ROTATAIA (ROTIFERS) JÁNOS VÁNGEL made collections in Fertő in 1892 to investigate the microscopic fauna of the lake. His collections were processed by JENŐ DADAY and 30 rotifer species were found (DADAY 1891 and 1897). The decisive studies on this taxon were done by the hydrobiology professor LAJOS VARGA. 1 His activity was concentrated on Lake Fertő, but he also identified rotifer materials collected in the vicinity of Kőszeg, for instance in the sphagnum bog of Alsó-erdő (Lower Wood —VARGA 1936a). His faunistic data on rotifers from Fertő appeared in several studies (VARGA 1926, 1929a, 1929b, 1930a, 1934a and 1941a). During his studies, he showed the presence of about 130 species in Fertő and 118 in the Hanság (VARGA 1935). The list of species shown in Fertő and the Hanság was published by SÁNDOR ANDRIKOVICS and ÁRPÁD BERCZIK (1975). Researchers investigating Zooplankton in Hungarian rivers surveyed rotifers and microcrustacean species in the Rába (finding 64 species of rotifer), Repce (32), Marcal (37) and Kerka (25) rivers. They also calculated the quantity of biomass in the waters (GULYÁS et al. 1995). 1 PÁNTOS, GY. 1963. Varga Lajos (1890-1963). Soproni Szemle 17:382-3; SEBESTYÉN, O. 1964.
