Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)

30 Historical survey and an authoritative edition did not appear until 1985. 98 A further, expanded edition has appeared recently." The first part of the manuscript covers in detail the useful plants and animals of the Őrség woods and meadows, including their popular names and beliefs and sayings about them. An account of the ornithological information in the work was given by JÓZSEF CSABA (1955a). VINZENZ KOLLÁR (1797-1860), a German zoologist who headed the Zoological Museum in Vienna, travelled in Hungary in 1820 and added several new species of insect to the country's fauna. He started his journeys at Fertő and gave three lectures on zoological subjects to the 8th Grand Assembly of Hungarian Physicians and Natural Scientists, held in Sopron. 100 The importance of Sopron as an intellectual centre of the natural sciences is exemplified by the choice of it as a venue for the 8th Grand Assembly of Hungarian Physicians and Natural Scientists, on August 11-17, 1847. 101 A historical outline and the texts of some of the lectures were edited and published in Pest by GEJZA HALÁSZ in 1863. 102 This included a Description of Sopwn County by JÁNOS SÁNDORFFY (1863). On page 111, in his account of the Regnum Animale, he referred to a manuscript in several volumes by GYÖRGY DRINOCZY, Premonstratensian canon of Csorna, 103 also covering this subject. At the fourth session on August 16, MÁTYÁS MÜLLNER lectured on the 'geographical and natural-history aspects of the vicinity of Sopron'. Several Sopron art collectors and naturalists displayed their collections for the assembly. The most important was the insect collection of Baron FERENC OCSKÓI OCSKAY, with some 200 specimens that included 'notable examples from all parts of the world'. OCSKAY also showed collections of many species of orthopteroid insects, snakes and lizards, and a collection of bird's eggs. ÖZSÉB (EUSEBIUS) VIDÁK presented an insect collection of 3000 specimens, as well as rich bird and bird's-egg collections. Birds were also exhibited by a man called KAYSZRAT. A special section of the exhibition was reserved for 'types of soil and 98 VÖRÖS, О. ed. 1985. Eőrséghnek Leírása... (Description of the Őrség...).
