Prominent among DABASY-FROMM'S researches in Vas County were his observations of the occurrence and breeding of the carrion crow (Corvus corone corone) and his establishment of the fact that the goldcrest (Regulus regulus) was breeding in Szombathely. At the National Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition held in Szombathely in 1928, DABASY-FROMM organized a big display on birds and bird protection, which won approval at home and abroad (DABASY-FROMM 1928a and 1928b). Apart from the work of his that appeared in print,

81 he left some significant manuscript writings. Volumes II, III, IV and V of his Bird Protection Activity are held in the Natural History Department of the Savaria Museum in Szombathely.

82 KATINKA BERNRIEDER, a great landowner at Rátót, made diligent bird observations in her district along the Rába (BERNRIEDER 1938, 1940, 1941 and 1942). Three important ornithologists were at work in Vas County in the 20th century. JÓZSEF CSABA born JÓZSEF WALZEL at Nagycsákány (Csákánydoroszló) on June 1, 1903, was a linguist and ethnographer, but above all a great ornithologist (Figure 14.8). He did rich and varied work and published his experiences and findings in more than 200 communications. His interests also extended to fish and mammals.
