Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)
Phylum Vertebrata 189 near Fertő (HARASZTHY 1979 and 1998). This would also have been the first occurrence datum in Europe, except that reassessment of the certifying photographs revealed that the bird was actually a hybrid of the red-backed and woodchat shrikes (L. collurio x L. senator — HADARICS and SCHMIDT 1997; MAGYAR et al. 1998). The lesser grey shrike (L. minor) used to breed regularly in the Sarród and Fertőújlak districts (BREUER 1934), but there have been only three nesting records in the last thirty years (HADARICS 1992C; JÁNOSKA 2001). It is a rare vagrant at Fertő (SIFFER and TRASER 1975). Of the two reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) subspecies, ssp. stresemanni is a frequent breeder and ssp. schoeniclus a common winter visitor. Records at Fertő of the Italian race (E. schoeniclus intermedia) appear in two publications (KEVE andSzijj 1943 and 1954). Other ornithological records for Fertő appear in numerous longer and shorter studies (WETTSTEIN-WETTERSHEIM 1924; SEITZ 1935a and 1938; STEINFATT 1936; WIMMER 1936; GOETHE 1939 and 1941; SMUK 1955 and 1972; DVORAK and GRÜLL 1983). The ecology of water fowl was examined by ANTAL FESTETICS, whose studies were centred on the lake (FESTETICS 1970 and 1971; FESTETICS and LEISLER 1968a, 1968b and 1970). There have also been several studies of the breeding species of the Seewinkel (SEITZ 1942), the small birds of passage along the eastern shore of Fertő (NIETHAMMER 1940), and the songbirds of Fertő (SEITZ 1943). A late 19th-century article covered the occurrence of 'duck' at Fertő (UHLIG 1898). Many other articles have dealt with occurrences and other ornithological data for the Hanság (CHERNÉL 1892; KIRÁLY 1930C, 1933, 1957 and 1960; HORVÁTH 1983; BALSAY 1989b; NAGY 1998). Seasonal observations have been the subject of several studies: late summer observations (SOLYMOSSY 1939d), autumn observations (REISER 1924; KIRÁLY 1930a), winter records (VASVÁRI 1942c), and winter visitors at Fertő (SZALAY 1905). Much about the history of ornithology at Fertő appears in historical works by ISTVÁN CHERNÉL (1887b, 1887c, 1888a, 1889, 1890 and 1892), ornithological 'fragments' by JAKAB SCHENK (1917a) and the guide 'outline' of OTTÓ HERMAN (1909). The chapter on birds in Fauna Regni Hungáriáé summarizes the history of ornithology in Hungary, including an account by JAKAB SCHENK (1917b and 1918b) of work at Fertő. The enduring work Hungary's Vertebrate Animals and their Economic Aspects by SÁNDOR LOVASSY (1927) includes Fertő and Hanság occurrences at Fertő of other vertebrate taxa as well as birds. RUDOLF ZIMMERMANN (1943), mentioned already, deals exhaustively with bird observations at Fertő. Only insignificant quantities of data on the avifauna of the district were added in the period between the Second World War and 1970, but the mass observations of the last twenty years have made it necessary to compile a new register. This list of species relies on the work of KÁRPÁTI (1983b), which authors have augmented with records for the last ten years (49 new species — FARAGÓ and STERBETZ 1985; HORVÁTH and KÁRPÁTI 1988; HADARICS 1990a, 1990b and 1991; HADARICS and PELLINGER 1993b; HADARICS et al. 1992b, 1993a and 1993b; MOGYORÓSI
