Vig Károly: Zoological Research in Western Hungary. A history (Szombathely, 2003)
Phylum Arthropode! 119 processed by DEZSŐ SZALÓKI (1996), who confirmed the occurrence of 145 species in 87 genera in the Őrség. Hitherto there had only been sporadic records published. Identification of the material collected before 1975 by the Hungarian Natural History Museum was done by SÁNDOR HORVATOVICH, ZOLTÁN KASZAB and LÁSZLÓ TÓTH. HORVATOVICH (1969) mentioned eight records from the Őrség and TÓTH (1973) one. Identification of the Colydiidae family was done by STANISLAW ADAM SLIPINSKI and OTTÓ MERKL. HORVATOVICH (1979, 1980 and 1981a) mentioned ten Őrség species and SLIPINSKI and MERKL (1993) one. When giving recent occurrence data for Tetratoma fungorum (Tetratomidae), TIBOR KOVÁCS and colleagues (KOVÁCS et al. 2000b) appended earlier records as well, including a location in Kőszeg (Óház-nyereg, October 17, 1938, leg. ERNŐ CSÍKI). DEZSŐ SZALÓKI (1999) also mentioned the species in Kőszeg—a specimen collected by GUSZTÁV SZELÉNYI. The species of the Scaphidiidae, Dasyceridae, Eucinetidae, Scirtidae, Byrrhidae, Elmidae, Heteroceridae, Eucnemidae, Throscidae, Elateridae, Dermestidae, Nosodendridae, Bostrichidae, Anobiidae, Sphindidae, Monotomidae, Silvanidae, Laemophloeidae, Erotylidae, Byturidae, Cerylonidae, Endomychidae, Coccinellidae, Corylophidae, Mycetophagidae and Ciidae families collected in the Őrség were processed by OTTÓ MERKL (1996). Hitherto, hardly any Őrség occurrence records could be found for them, apart from one or two species in articles by SÁNDOR HORVATOVICH (1979, 1980, 1981a and 1982). Altogether 217 species from these families were found, most of them reflecting by their presence the strong Alpine-Atlantic influences on the territory. A good example is the occurrence of two ladybird species, Scymnus ferrugatus and Coccinella hieroglyphica hardly found elsewhere in Hungary. Two species new to the Hungarian fauna appeared in the material: Hippodamia septemmaculata (Coccinellidae) and Xyletinus vaederoeensis (Anobiidae). Mention needs to be made of the occurrence of the elmid Macronychus quadrituberculatus in the West Hungarian border region. The species had been brought to the brink of extinction throughout Central Europe by the pollution of natural waters, 36 and it was thought to have died out in Hungary, as no specimens had been collected for forty years. 37 It was a pleasant surprise, therefore, to find it again recently in several localities in the Őrség. 38 The Hungarian occurrence records were gathered by TIBOR KOVÁCS and associates (KOVÁCS et al. 1999b). It has been found almost along the whole length of the Rába and in the 36 JÄCH, M. 1992. 42a Familie: Elmidae. In: LOHSE, G.A., and LUCHT, W.H. eds. Die Käfer Mitteleuropas, 2.
