FONTES CASTRIFERRIENSIS № 1 2001. Clay-pipe workshops and their products in the 19 century Transdanubian region Summary Following the Introduction compiled by the editor-in-chief of the series, Gábor Ilon and the Preface written by Dr. Irma Osskó, those preliminary questions have been recorded on paper that have arisen in connection to archaeological, historical, source critical and ethnographical studies. The amount of 3.056 clay-pipe fragments and 1.800 pes. of artifacts recovered from prairie town filling in was examined in order to determine the date of being earthed and the age of the Transdanubian pipe making workshops. A chart has been prepared to classify the seals on the pipes, from which it turned out that along with the products of the local master craftsmen marked by their names, such as SCHWARZ, FÜRST, HIRSCH (Körmend), BOSCOWITZ (Pápa), BONHAD M. SAURWEIN (Bonyhád) products of farther pipe making workshops, e.g.: Schemnitz (Selmecbánya), Podrecsány, Kis Azar, Wienerneustadt, Permitz, Theresienfeld, were also present. As a consequence of the comparison tests certain amount of data proves that the pipes marked M. HÖNIG SCHEMNITZ, BODNÁR SCHEMNITZ, ANTON PARTSCH, JOSEPH BARTSZ, PODRECS etc. were made in the Transdanubian centers with the shapes corresponding the ones used by the workshops having the name of the settlement. To further support the above and to recover the style features of each workshop, several charts have been made in the Appendix, out of which 83 present graphics of pipe details (contour, ornamentation, trade mark, master craftsman mark etc.), 30 tables include 157 photos, showing 400 clay-pipes in total. The chapter titled "Review of Research History" considers sources of geographical statistics from the beginning of Ше18 т and 19 th centuries selecting sometimes contradictory data in respect to pipe making workshops. Such outlined, and at the same time uncertain amount of data needed further precision by research in the archives (Conscriptiones Judeorum, 1807-1848. Conscriptiones regnicolaris, 1828), which was accompanied by the research on scattered pipe artifacts registered in museum records. To make an account of the pipes from the 19 th century is quite substantial for the reason to recognize the fragments examined. In his book titled "Pipázó eleink" ('Our ancestors smoking pipes') Prof. dr. Ferenc Levárdy is about to find Benjamin Anner as the earliest pipe master craftsman of Selmec. His point of view is based on the artifacts recovered around the turn of the 19 th century at 8, Street Also, whilst restructuring the yard of a house. The house 85
