rare plants as well. The results of the botanic activity of Imre Szenczy have been proved true for the past 170 years. László Ödön Horváth: The theologic life-work of Imre Szenczy Imre Szenczy was a Premonstrant teacher counted as one of the renowned scholars and outstanding personalities of the XIX. century. He was a true priest and pastor serving not only for science but to the glory of God and the saving of man. His theologic activity started by his contribution in editing of the periodicals „Religio és Nevelés" (Religion and Education) and „Fasciculi Ecclesi- astico-Literarii. More than hundred partly original partly translated articles by him were brought out in the journals referred to above. He himself did write no theologic works of some extent. Being a classical scholar he was translating Latin authors and watching over the pureness of the Hungarian language. However he accepted upon request of his brother Bishop Ferenc Szenczy to translate French resp. German works in order to enrich the religious-devotional, morally refining and didactive-educational literature available in Hungarian language. Lajos Balogh: The herbarium of Imre Szenczy in Szombathely Imre Szenczy was one of the most significant flora researchers of the middle third of the XIX. century after the period following the epoch of Pál Kitaibel’s activity. His course of life was accompanied along by his activity as a botanist. During this period he spared no effort to collect the plants available in the domanial gardens in the counties Vas, Sopron and Zala. He enriched his collection by plants received from botanists living in Hungary and abroad. His herbarium was placed in 38 large book-shaped boxes systematized according to the artificial system by Linné. Some of the 160-170 years old plants have preserved their original colours as well. The importance of this collection lies in the fact, too, that some of the plants shown can not be seen in nature any more. This herbarium was given as a present by Provost Vince Simon to the Principal Gymnasium of the order of the Premonstratensians of Szombathely in the school year 1871/72. Later on it came to the Botanical Section of the National Museum of Hungary. Since 1981 this collection has been in the property of Savaria Museum. This is the oldest collection in its Botanical Section. 45
