New data on iron mining in Murány The study focuses on the iron mining and processing activity of the most significant iron mining center of Hungarian iron mining in the early modern age. Exploitation was performed by private entrepreneurs in the area of the king's estate. In the center of the estate stood the castle which was also one of the bastions of the border castle system set up against the Turks. Based on recently exposed resources the study offers a new estimate on the volume of Hungarian iron production and offers proof on the seasonality of production. Based on sparse data the study renders it likely that a much higher volume of iron was traded with the opposing Turkish party than the provable quantity.
