The map is in the possession of the History Department of the Savaria Museum. As a result of improper storing conditions the object was badly damaged and contaminated and was földed to a third of its original site. Therefore the sections broke or were crumpled, missing or tattered. In such a condition it could neither be used for research or exhibition purposes. The entire surface of the paper showed dark-brown, round water spots, referring to the fact that the map was soaked. The aim of the restoring was to improve and conserve the bad physical and chemical condition of the map, as well as giving its proper aesthetic appearance back. In the course of the treatment the object was divided into segments, cleaned both wet and dry, neutralised, whitened, complemented, then supported and retouched. Moving and handling the poster size sheets caused a big problem. Considering the present storing conditions of the Savaria Museum (where storing a poster-size map on its back is impossible at the moment), I followed the collection manager's request and did not assemble the segments but stored them in a folder between non-corroding papers. As a result of the restoring we received an object which is easy to handle, can be used by researchers and can also be exhibited. 411
