Budapest Zsófia GEREBEN RESTORATION OF THE CEREMONIAL SHEATH OF A 19™ CENTURY OFFICER'S SABRE My task was to restore the ceremóniái sheath of a 19 th Century officer's sabre. The object is in the possession of the History Department at the Savaria Museum. Due to inappropriate storing conditions the sheath was badly damaged and suffered an aesthetic loss of its value. The ceremóniái sabre (2. image) belonging to it had earlier been restored, however, the sheath has so far remained untreated. The difficulty of the job was the fact that the object consists of several materials which had to be treated as a whole, furthermore one had to take heed the materials of the object and the materials used for the restoration had to be moved together. Another difficulty was that the sheath was stored at a damp place, therefore the leather darkened at many places and the glue dissolved almost completely. Düring the treatment I was given the opportunity to try a material, which had not been used so far in leather restoration, i.e. the Phytic acid, meant to conserve the corrosive damage caused by iron (II) ions. 285
