9 Examination of the Coleoptera fauna of a planned special natureprotection area at Kenyéri military airfield (Vas County, Western Hungary) (Insecta:Coleoptera) — The former Soviet military airfield at the village of Kenyéri (Vas County, Western Hungary) has mesoclimatic and edaphic attributes that make it an especially interesting habitat in Western Hungary. It has been designated a NATURA 2000 area of special natural protection. A survey of its natural assets has begun; examination of its Coleoptera fauna was carried out in 2005. Earlier important surveys of the Coleoptera fauna in Vas County were confined to the cooler areas with higher precipitation (Kőszeg Hills, Őrség and Vendvidék). This area was not studied before. The collection techniques used were pitfall trapping, beating, sifting from animal dung, sweep-netting, vine trapping and hand-collecting. The special character of the habitat also appears in high proportions of thermophilous and xerophilous Coleoptera species. There are several species associated with the sizeable local population of souslik which are known only from a few other localities in Hungary.
